Histopathology is the speciality in the diagnosis of cancers of solid organs.
Apart from the diagnosis, it also assess the response of a tumour to the treatment, adequacy of the excision of a tumour etc.
For a Consultant Histopathologist to arrive at a diagnosis of the tumour , the tissue removed by the surgeon has to undergo series of events at the histopathology lab , in which the selected tissue sections of the tumour is mounted onto a glass slide.
As indicated in the diagram processing of the selected tumour tissue is done by an automated processor , which contains multiple chambers that is filled with graded Alcohol, Xylene and Wax
These chemicals dehydrate, clear and impregnate the tissues.
At the end of the processing, the tissue sections are mounted on to a glass slide and stained in such a way that Consultant Histopathologist examines the slides under the microscope.
The results of this examination will be recorded as a detailed report which will be released to the patient and the treating Oncologist or/ and the surgeon who will decide on the best course of treatment for an individual patient. The accuracy of the report and the speed this process takes is very important for decision making specially in cancer treatment.
