Supporting Comfort, Dignity and Essential Care for Cancer Patients

Help Us Provide Essential Colostomy Care

The National Cancer Institute of Sri Lanka (Apeksha Hospital) cares for patients who may require ongoing
stoma care following surgery or during cancer treatment. Colostomy bags and compatible base plates are
essential single-use medical supplies that help patients manage stoma output safely, protect the skin around
the stoma and maintain comfort and dignity in daily life.

Why Colostomy Bags and Base Plates Are Needed

A colostomy bag is a pouch used to collect output from a colostomy. In a two-piece system, the bag connects
to a base plate (skin barrier), which adheres to the skin around the stoma. The base plate helps protect the
surrounding skin and provides a secure foundation for the pouch. These supplies need to be replaced
regularly according to the patient’s clinical needs and the product instructions.

How Patients Will Benefit

  • Essential daily care: Patients can access the basic supplies needed for safe and hygienic stoma
    management.
  • Skin protection: A suitable base plate helps protect the skin around the stoma from contact with output
and reduces the risk of irritation when properly fitted.
  • Improved comfort: Reliable, well-fitting appliances can support greater comfort during daily activities.
  • Dignity and confidence: Consistent access to appropriate stoma supplies can help patients manage
their condition with greater privacy and confidence.
  • Continuity of care: Maintaining an adequate supply helps reduce interruptions in essential stoma care.
