Support Critical Care for Cancer Patients

Help provide six urgently required ventilators for the Surgical ICU and Paediatric ICU at the National Cancer Institute of Sri Lanka.

NCISL plans to procure and commission six new ICU ventilators in 2027. The proposal identifies this as a very urgent Priority 1 requirement for the Surgical ICU and Paediatric ICU. The project will strengthen access to dependable mechanical ventilation for critically ill cancer patients who require invasive or advanced respiratory support.

Why the Ventilators Are Needed

Mechanical ventilation is essential when a critically ill patient cannot maintain adequate breathing without assistance. Cancer patients may need ventilatory support during severe illness, after major surgery or while receiving intensive care. Adequate equipment in the Surgical ICU and Paediatric ICU helps clinical teams begin respiratory support when it is required and maintain it safely.

How Patients Will Benefit

• Timely respiratory support:
  More functional ventilators will improve readiness to begin mechanical ventilation when a patient requires urgent respiratory assistance.
• Stronger surgical intensive care:
  The Surgical ICU will have greater capacity to support patients who need ventilation during critical illness or after major cancer surgery.
• Improved paediatric intensive care:
  The Paediatric ICU will have additional equipment to support critically ill children who require assisted ventilation.
• Fewer equipment related delays:
  Additional ventilators can reduce delays caused by the unavailability of suitable functioning equipment within the identified units.
• Dependable clinical service:
  Acceptance testing, preventive maintenance and service support will help keep the equipment available for patient care.
• Trained users and safer operation:
  Clinical-user training and approved operating arrangements will support safe and consistent use of the equipment.

What the Project Will Provide

• Six new ICU ventilators deployed according to the approved clinical requirement and priority order.
• Required accessories included under the final technical specification for safe clinical use.
• Installation and commissioning with safety checks and formal acceptance testing before use.
• Clinical-user training for staff responsible for operating the ventilators.
• Warranty and after-sales support including preventive-maintenance and service arrangements.

The final technical specification will be prepared and approved in consultation with Biomedical Engineering Services and the relevant clinical units.

Responsible Use of Donations

Donations will be managed through approved NCISL Development Committee channels. Procurement will follow applicable government financial and procurement regulations and include clinical validation, technical evaluation, documented financial controls, installation, acceptance testing, user training, warranty, maintenance and appropriate progress reporting.
